My daughter got in--we were shocked. She had a 2340 on her SAT, and was only 8 in her class of 600 in a public school that has not had an acceptance to Harvard in 3 decades. She is also an accomplished ballerina but my husband and I really didn't think that would do it. We had no family ties or other to Harvard. When we went to visit colleges, we passed up Harvard thinking that it was just a waste of time and money to go.

She didn't lead her life to go to Harvard as some do. She did what she loved, Ballet and tried to keep up with her school work. That's it. Who would have guessed she'd get in.

She's a great kid and will do well but I sincerely wish the other 25,000 all the best luck there is in the world.

Tough question - it seems that might not be enough in and of itself given the current data. Readers, your thoughts?
