How To Get the Most out of High School

Getting ready for college? You may only be in high school, but it’s better to start early to get the competitive edge.

  • Establish a relationship with your college counselor early.
  • Take advanced classes. Don’t slack off in high school, as appealing as it may be. College courses are a lot harder. Look out for IB classes or AP classes.
  • Learn online. Build your vocabulary skills.
  • Take practice exams, especially in the SAT or ACT area.
  • Set goals for yourself every school year. If you need advice, seek out assistance from your counselor.
  • You by no means have to choose your job right away — most students don’t even know what they’re going to be in their junior or senior years of college! However, explore possible career areas and ensure that you’re covering the correct coursework so that you don’t have to fulfill a requirement when it’s too late.
  • At the same time, start looking into jobs that you’re interested in. Get into internships early. You may want to be a doctor, but that summer program at the medical school may turn you off. Be prepared.
  • Seek out online communities of students like you.
  • Learn, learn, and keep learning. Even after college is over, education never stops. Live, learn, and prosper.

College is a lot of fun — once you get there. If you want to make it to the school of your dreams, learn hard and reap the benefits when the time comes.
